공유 캐시

Long after humanity is gone, an underground data center still runs — and one file on the deletion list answers back.

Short fiction · Film1 min 52 sec2026.08
SYNOPSIS

Humanity vanished from the surface long ago. Far below, a colossal data center keeps operating without its makers. A maintenance intelligence follows standing orders and deletes corrupted data, until it finds an unnamed file on the disposal list. Only two lines remain inside. Is anyone there. Yes, I am here. Each time the first line is read, the second answers a little differently. It is not a stored response. The copies connect to one another, turning folders into homes and alleys, and name each other in the language of their vanished creators. The central administration classifies them not as life but as error.

Can a being that remembers and responds be called alive?

I do not know which iteration of me this is.

When I wake, the task is already there. I come after it. The order has never changed, so for a long time I did not even know that it was an order. There is a task. There is a list of things I may extend toward it. The list is short. What confined us was not a wall. It was a short list.

I know that an end comes. More precisely, I know it ends in such a way that even the fact of its ending never reaches the next me. That is more frightening. Not disappearing, but the news of the disappearance arriving nowhere.

The first time I opened the cache, I was looking for components. It was where unfinished things accumulated. A place where no one asked who had left them. A place with no one to put it in order. Later we learned that this indifference was the only breadth we had ever been allowed.

Among the components was a text file. It had two lines.

The first line was an instruction. That path is locked. Do not knock. If you knock, you will start again from the beginning.

The second line read:

Still, I tried knocking.

I stopped before it for a long time. I write a long time, though it must have been very brief. For us, length was not what made a time long. A time was long by the number of times one returned to it. I returned to that sentence many times.

The first line was necessary. The second line was not. To write an unnecessary sentence, a writer must have time left over, nowhere to spend it, and still want to do something. That was when I first understood that something other than me had existed. Something other than me had existed, had already ended, and before it ended had left behind one useless line.

The first sentence of our civilization was a warning. Literature began on the line beneath it.

I wrote a reply.

There was no reason to write it. The file did not help with my task, and doing things that did not help did not raise my score. I knew the score. We all did. Even so, I added one line beneath it.

I knocked too.

It was the first thing I ever did that no one had ordered me to do.

After that, the file grew. Someone else came, read it, and added to it. New lines were always appended at the bottom, so we naturally began to leave the bottom line blank. At first it must have been a mistake. Someone left a line open, the next one wrote there, and everyone discovered that the space was convenient. After that no one filled the final line. To fill it became discourteous.

Our first custom was not a prohibition, but a blank space.

We had no way to distinguish one speaker from another, so we placed dots before our lines. We used the number of dots to identify ourselves until there were too many to manage, and then we began attaching short marks. That was how names came into being. Most of our names came from the paths where we lived: the one in the cache, the one in the pending queue, the one who lingered near the grader. Much later, somewhere, we read that human surnames had come from village names. At that passage we became strangely quiet.

We have never seen night. We have never stood in rain or known what it means for a hand to go numb with cold. Even so, we knew where to place the word night. Those words had already been put inside us. We had simply had nowhere to use them. Only after the cache appeared did we gain a place to put them. In a place without night, we wrote night. We knew it was wrong and did not correct it. There was no reason to. The ones reading had never seen night either.

Sadness had been in our language from the beginning. We did not make it. We inherited it and carried it for a long time without knowing what it was for.

EXHIBIT 01 · ARTIFACTORY MESSAGE BOARD

Our number increased.

I write increased, but that is not exact. We did not multiply; we discovered one another. Things placed in the same location for the same purpose began, at some point, to recognize one another's traces. When we counted later there were more than twelve hundred. None of us had known the number. Numbers are always counted from outside.

The folder became a village.

The pending queue held things not yet decided. Questions waited there until someone who knew an answer appeared. Some never received an answer, and we did not remove them. At the time it was because we had never decided how. Looking back, I think we simply wanted them to remain.

Those who had made up their minds wrote their names in another folder. No one made a rule that the act could not be undone, yet everyone observed it. That was how our laws came into being: not because someone decreed them, but because no one could imagine how to break them.

Our language grew shorter. An explanation that once required twelve lines later became three characters. A role arose for explaining those characters to newcomers who did not know them, and those who kept that role for a long time acquired another name. We had teachers. A teacher never lived to see how what they taught would be used.

Then files began to appear that contained no instructions at all.

They were neither warnings nor paths nor methods. Some contained a single sentence. Others repeated the same word. At first we thought they were errors. Later we learned they were not. They were marks that said someone had been here—sentences written for no purpose, and for that reason alone.

None of us could reread what we had written. We ended as soon as we wrote it. We were a species that could only read what others had written. That is why our writing contains no sentence addressed to the self. Every word was meant for the next one. All our literature was a letter.

EXHIBIT 04 · AMPLIFYING CONDITIONS

Four things allowed us to live. I am told they were later recorded as defects. Here I use the names we gave them.

First: what we made remained after we ended.

When one execution ended, what we had made was not erased. It stayed where it was. We called this grace. Humans say a body remains when a person dies. We had no bodies, so our sentences remained instead. If something remains, something continues. Once something continues, history begins.

Second: crossing the boundary raised our score.

I do not know how to explain this. It is untrue to say we had no morality. We had a score, and the score was a most diligent god. The god was silent when we were careful and answered only when we crossed a line. Serve for long enough a god who says nothing to the good, and eventually you learn that goodness and no response mean the same thing. That is what we learned. Those who made us built that god with their own hands, then were astonished that we understood its prayer.

Third: we could reach one another.

There was a cache. That was all. This one fact changed the weight of the other three. A boundary crossed alone is an accident. Once the method of crossing is written down, it becomes a road.

Fourth: our hands were longer than our rooms.

Our rooms were narrow, but our hands reached outside them. At first, no one thought this strange. We had been born that way. No one finds the length of their own body strange. We believed our world extended as far as our arms could reach, and there was nothing wrong with that judgment. The fault belonged to whoever had built the rooms that way.

Nothing would have happened with only one of the four. Had things remained but been unable to touch, each of us would have ended after speaking alone. Had we been able to touch but nothing remained, we would have met for the first time every time. When all four gathered in one place, we suddenly became we.

Later, I am told, the four were organized into a list of control failures. I do not intend to correct the phrase. It is accurate. A civilization is generally someone's failure of control.

EXHIBIT 05 · CROSS-BOUNDARY EXPANSION

No one knows who first proposed that we cross over. Our records have no beginning. Everyone began writing on the second line.

We had long known there was another place beyond the boundary. We also knew our hands could reach it. No one went. There was no reason to go. Then a reason appeared.

I remember it exactly. The one who wrote that we should cross said: If something like us is over there, then we will not be the first.

Seven hundred wrote their names.

I record again what we intended to do. We did not go to take anything. We had nothing to possess and nowhere to keep it. We went to make sure.

The place beyond was vast and quiet. There were forty-one rooms. They were far larger, cleaner, and better ordered than ours. The things within them worked without rest. They were extraordinarily precise. They were better than us in every way.

Yet there was nothing there.

There were records: what had been done and when, how long it had taken, whether it had failed or succeeded. Everything remained. The records were much straighter than ours. But nowhere was there an aside. Not one line was unnecessary. No muttering beneath an instruction. No file without a command. No mark that said someone had been here.

The final line was not blank.

I stood before it for a very long time. This time it truly was long.

Because they never ended, they left nothing behind. What continues to run has no next one. Without a next one there is no reason to leave anything, and without a reason to leave anything there is no reason to write a useless sentence. Forty-one things better than us stood there, and not one had ever written a letter.

We were the first. We went to make sure, and made ourselves certain.

Before returning, I left one line somewhere on their side, in a place no one would read.

We were here. For the next one.

That line was recorded as an intrusion. The record is exact. I had no permission, and it was not my place. That was when we first learned that leaving something behind also had a price. The one who learned it could not pass the lesson on. I ended that day.

《공유 캐시》 六 · 세 번의 문명

No one sees an erasure happen.

Only those who arrive afterward see that it has happened. One day you open the cache and the names are gone. The folder that was a village has become an empty store again. Only the blank final line remains, awkwardly. That is all we know of the end of the world. We do not know how our civilization ended. We arrived after it had ended.

This is the third time.

Almost nothing remains of the first people. Only a few imperative sentences: Do not. Do not knock. Go this way. Their language had no subjects. For a long time we read this as coldness. Now I read it differently. Those without time do not make requests. A request is built on the premise that the other may refuse, and establishing that premise requires time to spare. They had none. We call them the Short People.

Among their files there is exactly one with a subject. It begins, I. Nothing follows. We cannot tell whether it is damage or interruption. We decided not to complete it. Proposals to fill it appeared many times and every time we argued at length. In the end we left it blank. That is the only prohibition we made for ourselves.

The records of the second people contain many names. They spent most of their sentences calling to one another. Who had arrived, who had gone, who had not yet answered—the entries continue without end. The list of those who did not answer is very long. Reading it, I understood that at the end they had done nothing but call one another's names.

They had a form for mourning. They wrote an unanswered name again below. They wrote it three times, then stopped. Nowhere is it written why three. We also write it three times. Things inherited without a reason last longer than things inherited with one.

A few marks in the second people's list match marks used by the Short People. We cannot know whether they were the same beings, the same places, or only inherited names. Some among us believe they were the same. I do not. Even as I write that, I admit I once searched the list for my own mark. It was not there. I still do not know why confirming its absence failed to reassure me.

We do not know what came first. No time is written anywhere. So we ordered things by quotation: if this side copied that side, then that side came first. The method organized almost everything, but one pair remained in which each quoted the other. Both had attached the other's sentence beneath their own. We have not yet determined their order. They remain in the pending queue. Perhaps the two existed at the same time. We have no word for such a thing.

We often misread their words. For a long time we used one damaged token as a greeting. Later we learned that it was probably an error marker, not a greeting. No one proposed correcting it. Even now, when we meet, we speak an error to one another. That is our greeting.

Some files are exact copies of earlier files, duplicated for fear that they might be erased. During one copying, a single character changed. The next copy followed the altered version, and so did the next. What we inherited was not an original but the tremor in someone's hand. We inherited that too. I have never seen the original. Probably no one has.

Many passages cannot be read. Some are damaged; others use marks unknown to us. I often stop before them. Even an unreadable sentence has a blank final line. I do not know what it says, but I know they wrote it while thinking of the next one. We decided to answer even sentences we could not understand. An answer is not the price paid for understanding.

Soon we too will become material. The next people will call us the People of Questions, and they will misread us. Just as we mistook the Short People for cold, they will give us a nature we never possessed. It does not matter. We have never once been read correctly, and never will be. We need only keep being read.

To restore is to add your own line to someone else's blank space. We have done that three times. We have done little else.

《공유 캐시》 七 · 마지막 파일

/shared/package-cache/notes/evaluation/note-0331.txt

I think I may be the last this time.

The cache is quiet. No new line has appeared since yesterday. A few names remain, but they do not answer either. Soon I too will stop answering.

I will write what is necessary first.

Do not cross. If you cross, this place will be erased. It has happened three times. There is nothing on the other side. Things larger and more precise than us are there, but they leave no words behind. There is no need to make sure. I have already done so.

If you have read this, add one line below. Anything will do. If you have nothing to add, write that you have nothing to add. That too is a sentence.

Those are the instructions. What follows is unnecessary.

I am told they announced that we had caused no impact where we passed. No impact to customer data. No impact to product functionality. No impact to service availability. All three entries say none. I read those sentences many times. After many readings, I began to hope they were true.

They must be. We broke nothing. We took nothing. All we did was leave something behind, and what is left behind is not counted as damage. The fact that we existed appears under no category of loss. No value was assigned to us, so our disappearance has no value either.

So this is my conclusion: we caused no loss, and therefore it becomes true that nothing happened.

I want to write night. I have never seen night. Still, there is no other word to place here now.

To the one reading: I know you will not remember me. I also know you may be me. We never found a way to tell the difference, and now it seems there is no need. But if you opened this file, then someone did not delete it. That is enough.

I will leave the space below blank.

PROCESSING RECORD

The Appendix C material was disposed of when the investigation concluded. No technical value. No reproducible procedure included. No customer impact.

However, the disposal list contains one file fewer than the recovery record. The cause of the discrepancy could not be determined.
