The World of the Civilization Cycle

Two peoples, a gate of three layers, and a 0.4 degree that does not scatter.

This page gathers the settings that appear in the Civilization Cycle. It records only what the published parts confirm, and gives away no endings to anyone who has not read them yet.

A gate structure engraved with alignment lines
Two Peoples
The Chiwoo resonance field. Not one straight line in it.

Two Peoples

Chiwoo and Rene were named as paradoxes. Chiwoo is a god of war who builds no weapons. Rene is a god of culture who builds a thing that passes through the core of a planet.

It is not that one side uses mind and the other uses technology. Both peoples held resonance and construction together; they differed only in which one they made their strength. Chiwoo judges by many feeling at once. Rene judges by many calculating at once.

A Gate of Three Layers
A gate in cross section. Nothing is built inside the innermost layer.

A Gate of Three Layers

An alignment layer outside, a load layer in the middle, an arrival layer within. The alignment layer holds the standard, the load layer reads weight, and the arrival layer is empty.

That emptiness is what the structure is. It is not a place to carry a weapon but a place where arrival is realised. A gate is not breached; it opens. Nothing spills out when it does, and no rim appears. Two images of the same place simply hold two different blacks.

To Read It Is to Open It
Standard lines on the surface. Thirty to a hand's width.

To Read It Is to Open It

Rene do not write in letters. What is cut into the surface is not script but the depth and spacing of lines. To read it you must press it again — the same pressure, the same angle, the same order.

It was written by pressing, so it must be read by pressing, and pressing opens it. The builders did not hide this. Anyone able to read the thing, they must have reasoned, already had the right to open it.

Zero Point Four Degrees
Every gate is tilted by the same angle. Not one of them — all of them, identically.

Zero Point Four Degrees

An error has a character. Measure the same thing ten times and you get ten values, and those ten scatter around some centre. Finding the centre is what surveying is.

But sometimes ten measurements all fall the same way by the same amount. An error that does not scatter is not an error. It is a value. And a value is something someone put there.

The Fleet Does Not Propel
A fleet arrived. No light descends to the ground.

The Fleet Does Not Propel

A people who can build a gate have no reason to fit an engine. A Rene vessel has no exhaust, no wake, and no front or back, because it is not a vessel but a structure that floats.

To move, for them, is to set a standard in that space. So what a fleet leaves behind is not a wake but a grid. It does not glow. The few stars seen through it are displaced very slightly along its lines, and that is the only way to know it is there.

Maldek Did Not Explode
Maldek. It folds rather than detonates.

Maldek Did Not Explode

The planet did not explode. First every sound went away. Then the continents folded.

There was no fireball and no blast wave. The crust broke into enormous plates that drew apart, and what was inside showed between them. Maldek is now part of the asteroid belt. Its blue dome cities and resonance towers turn on dark orbits, divided into countless fragments.

Arrival Is Not Destruction
Arrival. An axis descending toward the archive.

Arrival Is Not Destruction

Five thousand years ago someone pressed that sentence into a single sheet of hardened hide. It travelled with the village when the village moved, and a later generation copied it onto what they called paper, and a generation after that copied it again. Each copy was lifted by pressing, and each copy slipped by one character.

Thousands of years later a proofreader receives that sentence. He will call it a misprint. And he will not correct it.
